So what about airbrush tattoo systems? They look appealing.  They seem logical.  It looks like you will save money. Well you wont.

A lot of interested people send me emails asking why I am against airbrush tattoo systems.  The reason why is that you have to realize that these companies are out to make money.  Right? It seems obvious enough.  But you have to see that they put kits together for people who dont want to take the time to buy “all” the things separately.

Right because it is sometimes easier to just by the all in one.  If that’s what you want then go for it.  But if you dont mind taking an extra hour or so to read up a little you will see you can buy it all separately for much cheaper.  The reason is because when you buy an airbrush tattoo system, you are buying “fillers”.  Things like 25 business cards! Well first of all if you are going to get business cards you will need more than 25! so you can buy them seperately from a business card company! Not the airbrush tattoo supply store.  This will save you a lot of money.

So find out what you need, don’t buy an airbrush tattoo system.  Just take the time and do whats right for your new business.

But the one I want to talk to you about is the airbrush tattoo booth.  If you were to pick this as your weekend business you would be making the best choice.  The reason for this is that it is just all around better!  I know that sounds too simple and it is, let me explain a little more.

If you want a weekend business, then you either need a business with little work or with little overhead costs.  Right?  The fact that you want a weekend business tells you that your are short on time and/or money.  So a food booth is not likely a good a choice as there is a lot of equipment (freezers, coolers, barbecues), a lot of preparation (getting food ready before show, ordering food, health standards to be weary of, keeping stocked throughout the year and each individual show) and all that adds up, it adds up quick.  So you can scratch that off.

How about an art booth? Are you an artist? If not then we can just skip it now! If you are then this may be a good choice, do a search on google for “selling art at shows”.

On to the next, face painting.  Face painting is the less profitable, more work and less exciting little brother of airbrush tattoos! Face painting is more for charity events or small birthday parties.

So the best weekend business, in my opinion, is the airbrush tattoo business.  It can cost around $500 (or less) to start, and the yearly costs are minimal.  And I really do mean minimal. In my e-guide I explain how I have to order paint once a year, one order of paint costs me around $230.  So $230 a year, add other costs like traveling, lodging (optional! I sleep in my car most times!) and cotton pads and alcohol. The lodging and traveling costs would be there no matter what booth you had, so its paint, rubbing alcohol and cotton pads! Both the cotton pads and alcohol are so cheap you wont even need to factor them into your costs for a show!

It is of the utmost importance that everything in your booth is organized and easy to find.  It is not uncommon in the hectic work we do for our organized things to be misplaced, let alone when you don’t know where they are supposed to be to begin with.

The only way to deal with this is to find spots where those specific things go.  Stencils here. Powder there. Money here etc.  There is no good or bad way to do it, just make sure you do it. This way when you need something you will know where it is.

When someone wants to write you a check, you can hand them a pen instantly.  When you need to give change, it is there instantly.

It is simple and may seem obvious but unfortunately it is an idea that gets neglected.

You will get some shows near you, but a lot will be the next city or town over.  If you live in  big city however, you will have A LOT of shows to choose from.  You may want to just find a busy spot, like rent a 10×10 patch of land from a store owner and setup there everyday! (be sure to check with your local government or county office first to make sure you can!)

But yes traveling is necessary for an airbrush tattoo booth.  But it will be fun, it is kind of exciting going to new places meeting new people.  You usually get there very early with the crisp morning air cycling thru your lings! It is very refreshing.

So fill the car up, stock up on snacks, fill the cooler and head on out!

When booking shows you are trying to find events that are first, cheap to enter, you don’t want to be spending $500 just to setup for the day, you want it more like $20-$100 to setup, this will lower your costs and allow you to take more profit.  Second you need to find shows that you think will have kids.  Now most shows have kids, you may find some that are particularly suited to kids, but as long as you don’t book a show at a biker rally then you will be fine. (actually biker rallies can be good, they tend to be good tippers!)

You want a show that will give you the most amount of time to work as well.  If you have the choice between a show that is 5 hours long and one that is 10 hours long, take the 10 hour one.  This means you have 5 more hours to pull in money.

As long as you think about each show and how it will be then you wont go wrong, just don’t book whatever comes your way.  UNLESS! Sorry didn’t mean to shout, but this is an important point.  In my e-guide I suggest you take as many shows as you can your first year.  This way you can get your foot in the door and you will have first refusal next year.  If you are in a show this year, most show promoters will give you first refusal, meaning that they will ask you before they ask any other airbrush tattoo artists. This is very ,very good!

Here is a little tip.  You will always have to fill out an application (usually), be sure to either photocopy (or you may have your own copy) and take it with you to the show.  This will make it easier for the show promoters and staff to quickly and easily direct you where you need to go.  They can look at what you got and what they got and you can both get busy doing what you need to do.

If you don’t have an application, then just be sure to tell them:

Your name
You company name if you have one
Your booth space number
What you do (ie airbrush tattoos)

This is what they need to know to identify you properly, as soon as they know who you are they will let you get setup.

When you become a regular you can usually just go setup! Without seeing them, although I always try to find them before I setup incase they had to make changes or move some people.
